The 1981 Encuentro reflected the larger social and political conditions out of which Latin American feminisms were evolving. The conflict between the feministas and the militantesexemplified the divergences in Latin American feminisms during the 1980s. However, it also reflected the genesis of Latin American feminist ideas in women’s political activism. So, although mired in conflict, the Encuentros signaled the intimate ties between ideas regarding gender struggle and the political conditions that give rise to those ideas.
